The Dogline
I headed out for Port Arthur to have a look at where the prison is. I was warned by the gal at the reception, that it was a huge government run tourist attraction. She said that she had to take some people out now and then and she didn’t think it was really very much other than a bunch of rubble buildings. She said it didn’t have a ‘feel’ to it at all. I gotta go see anyway.
The highway department was clearing the side of the road with this cool attachment.

A farmer with time on his hands and a little scrap lying around and highway frontage always seem to come up with something different to amuse.

The turnout and parking area for the Dogline had these guys transferring the catch of the day.

There is a little old building that houses an interpretative center and I took photos of most of the info and have it posted here for what it is worth. Look at it as a history lesson.

Here ya go Jack. This one was right on the walkway next to the house. He wanted to show off so I took his picture for ya.

This was a reliefe map of the area in bronze. I think it is interesting that they had those platforms so far out in the bay indicated by those shiny brass dots.

A bronze dog on duty.

I like the dog giving this guy hell….

There was even dog shit on the ground.

I walked back along the beach from the dogline and came to this place where some developer is trying to sell four lots. Evidently the government made him leave access to the beach and dogline right though the middle of the property. That is the walkway I came back in.

just down the road a little was this ‘blow hole’ arch made by erosion from the sea waves.

I rode on out to the Prison area and before I got down to the visitor area I stopped and snapped this pic of the rubble ruins of the prison. I think the reception gal is right. There didn’t seem to be much left in any kind of shape. I went on down to the center and looked at the fee schedule and it looks like it cost $28 to go have a look and walk around. Looked like a major sheep chute to me so I turned around and left. One of the best things about going on out there was the road after I got out of the city influence. These coastal roads are really nice in this hilly country.

I stopped in at a little artsy pizza parlor and had them make me a Hawian pizza. It was really good and I had enough to add to my supper tonight. I really liked this wall made of regular cement blocks filled with rocks.

The waiter came out when I was finished and gave me a little tin fish that contained this chocolate fish. I like that little extra….

I had to take this photo of the fancy snacks that they were selling too. It so happens that the black berries are in bloom and some are ready for picking. I stopped at a nice place and picked a few for myself along the road. They must have just broke open a little of the top of these to show the insides off. Very effective I think.

I am in serious Tasmanian Devil country here. I tried to get him to bite my finger here too….

they say that they are nocturnal and are not vicious at all unless cornered.
