Dog
digs a hole.
I decided to finally start
on building a small cabin here at my camp. I really don’t want to have to stay
here for the winter but if I do, I want a nice warm, sunny place to hang out. I
am going to build a 16’ X 32’ using the foam blocks that are filled with
rebar and concrete. This should make a super insulated and airtight space that
will be easy to heat or keep cool. I had Ted Pyle come with his back hoe the
other day to dig a hole for the cabin. He showed up with his 1961 Autocar diesel
truck. This is an old oil field service truck that Ted keeps in top condition.
The sound of this old truck is amazing and SO sweet.

He set up his laser
leveling unit and went ahead and started digging.

The cabin is going to be
set into the hill side on the north and west wall leaving the south side for the
sun and the east side for the view.

The size and shape of the
hole as well as the location I wanted the dirt wasn’t much of a challenge for
Ted. He is an amazing machine operator.
He would get down off the
machine every now and then to check the elevation. The stick reads either high
or low by making a sound, but I couldn’t hear it so he had to do it.

The finished hole with
little trench for plumbing (if I ever get around to that part) and the view to
the north east. The cabin floor will be 32” higher than this which will give
me a nice crawl space and a wood floor. I could have poured a slab but I wanted
a wood floor if I have to live there any length of time.
